The Chasqui Tour

This active tour starts with lovely colonial city of Arequipa before crossing dizzyingly high passes to enter the remote but astounding Colca Canyon, and continue to the birthplace of the Inca civilisation, Lake Titicaca. After a relaxing train trip to Cusco, capital of the Inca Empire, we head to the Sacred Valley to enjoy some walking in the Inca heartland. However the highlight is our trek along the majestic Inca Trail to legendary Machu Picchu.

14 night itinerary:

  • Lima - 1 night
  • Arequipa - 1 night
  • Colca - 2 nights
  • Lake Titicaca/Puno - 1 night
  • Sacred Valley - 3 nights
  • Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - 3 nights
  • Cusco - 2 nights
  • Lima - 1 night

Days 1-2
Depart Monday, Wednesday or Friday for Lima, arriving the same day in the evening. Overnight. Fly to Arequipa, built from white volcanic rock at the foot of a towering snow-capped volcano. (B)

Days 3-4
Scenic drive to the Colca Canyon, passing majestic volcanoes and mountain landscapes on a desolate plateaux. From our lodge we drive to the Cruz del Condor and walk along the top of the canyon, condors soaring above. We walk past the extensive Inca terracing and through the
villages of Cabancay, Chivay & Mara, whose local ladies still dress in their traditional embroidered dresses and hats. (B,L)

Days 5
Early morning return to Arequipa for the afternoon flight to Juliaca and from there transfer to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Overnight in Puno. (B)

Days 6-7-8
Very early short glimpse of the floating Uros Islands before taking the Orient Express train journey high across the Andean mountains to Cusco. Sit by the window and have lunch as the landscape unfolds. On arrival we transfer to the Sacred Valley of the Incas' for three nights
and two days to explore. Full day tour to Chinchero, visiting the market, past the salt mines of Maras and down to the Urubamba river for lunch. Continue to the Inca village and ruins of
Ollantaytambo, still inhabited today and finally Pisac ruins for sunset. Next day at leisure. (B)

Days 9-11
Transfer to the start of three days trekking the ancient Inca Trail through cloud forests and jungle, past old Inca ruins and running streams, both up and down imposing valleys, before, on the forth day, arriving at the awe inspiring sanctuary of Machu Picchu itself for a tour of the site. We spend three nights under canvas, with all meals, guide, sleeping bag, equipment and porters provided. (B,L,D)

Days 12-13
Return to Cusco for two nights with time at leisure to absorb the atmosphere and watch the world go by. Afteroon tour of of the city, including the Cathedral, Plaza de Armas and the main archaeological sites such as the fortress andreligious site of Sacsayhuamán.(B)

Days 14-15
Early morning flight to Lima and afternoon free to explore the capital, visiting the grand colonial squares, or the Gold Museum. Return home on an overnight flight, arriving on Day 16. (B)
