Capital of the Department of Ancash, Huaraz is located at an altitude of 3,060 m above sea level and at an 8 hour drive from Lima. The old city was totally rebuilt after the earthquake that destroyed the original one in 1970. The new city does not have the charm of the other towns of the Callejón. Nevertheless, its people are warm and the landscape is worth seeing. Has a good number of hotels, and of all prices, so it is the centre of all the tourist services in the Callejón. Overnight at hotel
El Patio de Monterrey
.

El Patio de Monterrey is located in the small village of Monterrey, just 10 minutes drive from Huaraz. It is a lovely bungalow-style hotel of 28 rooms, built in the premises of what was once an hacienda. There a gardens and a restaurant with fireplace making for a cozy, comfortable and atmospheric place to stay.

Day 2. Traverse the Cordillera Blanca via the Cahuish Tunnel to visit Chavín de Huántar, South America's oldest and most advanced culture, and one of the six independent centers of civilization in world prehistory. Chavín’s monumental granite pyramids and ceremonial plazas are linked by stone-carved staircases and platforms. Subterranean chamber complexes, known as galleries, are the most unusual Chavín architectural style. Visit the Lanzón Gallery with its supreme deity of Chavín, a large stone idol called Lanzón that is finely carved with human, Jaguar, Anaconda, and Harpy Eagle iconography. Sophisticated stone-carved friezes, columns, giant heads, and astronomic representations are a puzzle for Andean archaeo-astronomers.
The road that leads to Chavín de Huántar is unpaved. Box lunch included. Overnight at hotel El Patio de Monterrey.

Day 3. Drive along the magnificent Callejón de Huaylas Valley between the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra ranges. Travelling across picturesque towns you arrive at Yungay, and then ascend towards the Llanganuco Canyon. The scenery becomes increasingly spectacular as you ascend the slopes of the Cordillera Blanca.

Continuing the ascent you arrive at the spectacular Portachuelo de Llanganuco pass (4,775 meters above sea level). Here you have the overwhelming sight of a giant glacier cirque formed by the World’s highest tropical peaks such as Huascarán, Huandoy, Chacraraju, Chopicallqui and Pisco, among others. After we walk down a trail along the Llanganuco River, the trail crosses patches of Quenual tree forest covered by bromeliads, orchids and other native vegetation. We arrive at the end of the trail, where our car is waiting for us. We then descend to the Callejon de Huaylas to return to Huaraz and transfer to our hotel. Lunch included. Overnight at hotel El Patio de Monterrey.
