Take a trip back in time to the land where once the mighty Incas held sway. Tradition, music and culture envelop us as we walk through local markets, explore the majestic ruins of Machu Picchu, climb aboard local trains which take us through landscapes ranging from lush subtropical areas to the barren, wind-swept altiplano.
Days 1-2
Depart for Lima on Saturday arriving the same day. Transfer
to hotel. The following morning take a guided tour of
Lima, including the grand colonial squares in the centre,
the Presidential Palace and Larco Herrera Museum. (B)
Days 3-4
A morning flight to La Paz. We are guided around the city in
the afternoon exploring the maze of bustling streets,
visit the colourful witches' market and the Moon Valley.
Spend the next day at leisure. (B)
Days 5-6
Today we fly to Sucre, whose earlier inhabitants left a rich
legacy of colonial buildings, many of which are
still painted their traditional white, imparting an
atmosphere of gentle calm. A half day tour of the city is
included.(B)
Days 7-8
Continue by bus to Potosí (4,070m). Towering over the
city, the Cerro Rico is an imposing, colourful mountain
whose stores of precious metals, although seriously
depleted, are still being mined. We visit the
central district and the old Mint. Overnight at our
hotel, returning to Sucre the following day. (B)
Day 9
Full day excursion to Tarabuco's all-encompassing Sunday
market. A colourful and busy affair, where locals wear
their traditional costumes. (B)
Day 10
An early flight to La Paz from where we travel to the
charming village of Copacabana, overlooking the huge,
Lake Titicaca, and framed by snow covered peaks. We take a
boat to Sun Island, and walk along farmers trails and terraces
up to the Ecolodge, and stay overnight. The lake is a
backdrop for isolated farms, a small village and no motor
vehicles. (B)
Day 11
Morning time to explore the Sun Island before continuing our
route skirting Lake Titicaca to Puno. (B,L)
Day 12
Depart by train part of the Orient Express group, travelling
across the Andean landscape of towering mountains, remote
farms and small villages. Arrival in Cusco, overnight (B)
Day 13
A full day excursion to the Sacred Valley of the Incas,
driving through the beautiful Urubamba valley, visiting
the ruins of Ollantaytambo Pisac, small villages in the
countryside, the ancient Inca terraces where people
still plant Quinoa and the local market. (B,L)
Days 14-15
A stunning rail journey following the course of the
Urubamba River. We roll along on a glorious trip with
fantastic viewsof the "Sacred Valley of the Incas",
culminating in the aweinspiring Machu Picchu. Overnight at
our hotel, before returning to Cusco. (B)
Day 16-17
Morning free. Afternoon tour of Cusco and
surrounding archaeological sites. Fly to Lima and
fly home arriving on Day 18 (Tuesday). (B)
