The Shaman Tour

Tango, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, pan-pipes... Latin America's music is every bit as diverse and fascinating as its people. This wide-ranging coast- to-coast tour offers everything from jungle adventure during an Amazon cruise to insights into life in Andean villages, from the great cosmopolitan cities of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro to the designer architecture of Brasilia, and the lovely colonial cities of Salvador do Bahia and Cusco, plus the haunting, majestic ruins of the Inca Empire at Machu Picchu.

Days 1-4
Depart Thursday evening for Buenos Aires arriving the following day. On arrival, transfer to our hotel and spend the day at leisure. Next day we take a full tour of the city including Recoleta with its European architecture, trendy shops and street cafes. We visit the Presidential Palace, Cathedral and go to La Boca, to see the brightly decorated houses in the famous 'Caminito'. Explore at leisure or even dance the Tango. (B)

Day 5
Today we fly up to Puerto Iguazú, visiting the Argentinian side of the awe-inspiring Iguazú Falls, surrounded by tropical rainforest; swifts dive into the falls catching insects, butterflies flit about and toucans fly overhead. Overnight at our hotel
overlooking the waterfalls.(B)

Days 6-8
Spend the morning exploring the Brazilian side for a panoramic view and relaxing at the falls and take an afternoon flight to Rio de Janeiro. Following day tour including Rio's famous landmark, the statue of Christ the Redeemer, on
Corcovado mountain, granting fabulous views of the city and Guanabara Bay. We
pass through the lush forest of Tijuca, with its tropical trees, waterfalls and
pleasant shade. Spend the following day exploring at leisure. (B)

Days 9-11
Flight to Salvador da Bahía, a city of contrasts, where Catholicism and Candomblé live side by side, the exotic cuisine reflecting the African influences, and the unique rhythms of the North-East. Spend the afternoon visiting the city, including
its markets, churches and colourful Pelourinho district. You have the following day free to explore. (B)

Day 12
Morning flight to the capital, Brasília, an ultra-modern city, set out in the form of a primed bow and arrow, with the 'super-blocks' spanning out in large arches. We spend the afternoon visiting the main areas of interest including the Palacio de Alvorada and Metropolitan Cathedral. (B)

Day 13
We fly today to Manaus, booming in the 19th Century with the arrival of the rubber barons. Our morning tour of Manaus includes a visit to the grandiose Opera House, built during a period of sheer extravagance; hence the materials used are almost entirely European. (B)

Days 14-16
Fly deeper into the heart of the Amazon, at Tabatinga and short drive to Leticia. Tour this isolated fishing port bustling with trade between Peru, Colombia and Brazil. Board the M/V Amazon Journey Jungle Discovery for 3 nights cruising to Iquitos with all meals and daily excursions included. The ship has a basic local design with three decks, 12 cabins with private facilities, a lounge and dining room, all with air-conditioning and a large observation sun deck with bar and barbeque. Each day the guides will take you on excursions to observe the exuberance of the rainforest, the wildlife and witness how life is developing in the villages stranded along the river. (B,L, D)

Day 17-18
Didembark, explore Iquitos and transfer to the airport, bound for Lima. Following morning tour visiting the Larco Herrera museum and the Plaza de Armas with its grand colonial squares, buildings decorated with intricate wooden balconies, sophisticated restaurants and excellent cuisine. (B)

Days 19-21
Transfer to the airport and flight to La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, perched high in the Andean mountains. A bustling city settled in a large basin, where adobe houses cling precariously to the sheer sides. A maze of streets and alleyways make up this city, leading one to colonial squares, witches' markets selling assortments of colourful potions, and many little shops full of wonderful weavings and tapestries. (B)

Day 22
We journey to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, and onto Puno, staying in a hotel overlooking the lake. En route we visit Sun Island and Copacabana, skirting the lake shore, the scenery is stunning with Inca terracing still being worked by the locals, and the snow-capped cordillera stretches out into the background. (B, L) 

Day 23
An early morning start to a day on an unforgettable Andean Explorer train journey, part of the Orient Express group. We sit at a table by the window crossing the Andean altiplano, towering mountains and small villages where people await to sell local crafts. On arrival in Cusco we transfer to the Urubamba Valley for 3nights. (B)

Days 24-25
On Sunday we have a full day excursion visit of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Urubamba valley, affording stunning views of the fertile plains and Inca terracing. We visit the ruins of Ollantaytambo scaling the hill above a charming Inca village, and Pisac ruins, which provide us with some of the most impressive examples of Inca masonry. (L) We continue on to Pisac market, a colourful affair, where local
food, alpaca weavings and handicrafts are sold. The following day is free to unwind, horseriding or walks in the countryside (B)

Days 26-27
Our day begins with a spectacular train journey following the Urubamba River and culminating at Machu Picchu. Once at the ruins, we have a guided tour (L) and the afternoon free, staying overnight and following morning to explore, before returning to Cusco. (B) 

Day 28-29
Morning visit of Cusco, the fascinating blend of Inca and colonial heritage, the Cathedral and surrounding Inca archaeological sites of Sacsayhuaman and Kenko. Day at leisure to explore further or sit on the main square as the locals do and watch the world go by (B). 

Day 30
Flight to Lima connecting with your eturn flight home, arriving the following day, Day 31 (Sunday). (B)
