La Paz is the world's highest capital and sits in an immense basin at 3636m. Whether arriving by air or road, the view of the barren altiplano and La Paz protected in the basin is awe-inspiring, whilst nearby lies the Illimani Volcano, snow-capped, towering up into the clouds.
   


Suggested Excursions in La Paz:

A full day tour of the city with a local guide, taking in the main sights - including Plazas and churches, markets and the Indian half of the city where the streets are lined with stalls selling wonderful weavings, traditional musical instruments and jewellery. You will visit the witches market, where charismatic ladies sell a range of herbs, bottled potions and amulets to ward away evil and help you in all of life's troubles, from money to love, or aid in passing an exam. . Continue on to the Valle de la Luna, known as the Moon Valley due to the dramatic and bizarre rock formations, from here you also get great views of the Muela del Diablo, the Devils Tooth, a huge tooth shaped rock on the other side of the valley, coloured in glorious reds and oranges.

Half day private tour to the Tiahuanaco ruins set in the beautiful countryside between La Paz and Lake Titicaca.
This site is fast becoming one of the most important in South America. Tiahuanaco boasts a magnificently carved Gate of the Sun, Acapana Pyramid and chambers cut from stone with faces staring from the wall.
