Day 1 On arrival in Petrolina, transfer to bus for trip to the Serra da Capivara National Park and our pousada which we use as a base for our excursions.(B)

Day 2 Declared as Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the Serra de Capivara National Park is an archaeologist's paradise, with its deep winding canyons, containing some 360 natural shelters and caves which preserve an incredible collection of paintings and engravings. Visit the Boqueirão da Pedra Furada shelter, the oldest archaeological site in the Americas.(B,L,D)

Day 3 Gentle hike through the Paraguaio Canyon, to view the stunning rock art and scenery.(B,L,D)

Day 4 Visit to the Research Centre where specialists show their discoveries on pre-historic man and fauna of that time.(B,L,D)

Day 5 Depart for Petrolina and transfer to airport.(B)

In The Flintstones Era


Prehistoric rock

5 days • 4 nights

Day 1 Arrive in Natal and transfer to your charming beachfront hotel. Time at leisure to enjoy the beautiful Ponta Negra beach. An evening talk is given on archaeology, paleontology, geology and ecology of the regions visited on the tour. (D)

Day 2 Early morning departure to Acari and visit to the local museum, covering aspects of life in the harsh Sertão. Continue after lunch to Dinosaur Valley, inhabited by these creatures some 120 million years ago, where footprints can be seen, clearly preserved, with one track stretching for 180ft. Overnight at our hotel with its thermal baths. (B,L,D)

Day 3 Early morning departure for Lajedo de Soledade. Limestone weathering has formed canyons, caves and shelters which are decorated with prehistoric paintings, estimated to be 3,000-10,000 years old. Visit to the local museum housing findings from the site. Lunch at the pretty Apodi Lake, in the shade of palm trees, and continue to Mossoró where we overnight at our hotel with 10 thermal pools. Day 4 Early morning departure for São Raphael. Granite mountains surrounding this town hide natural waterholes which have revealed fascinating discoveries; countless numbers of fossils, from the Ice Age, some of giant sloths, mastodons and sabre-toothed tigers and cave-paintings can also be seen. We have time to explore and bathe in the natural pools before continuing to see the Cabugi Volcano. Return to Natal. (B,L,D)

Day 5 Transfer to airport. (B)
