The powerful Mayan civilisation flourished for centuries before its people mysteriously weakened and abandoned their cities to the encroaching jungle. Over 1,200 Mayan sites have been discovered throughout Mexico and Guatemala, and many more remain still shrouded by a tangle of jungle vegetation, waiting to be uncovered. In this tour we visit the great archaeological sites of the Petén region: El Ceibal, Aguateca and Tikal, before heading to Guatemala's highland region to see how their descendants live today.
