The surrounding countryside of Arenal affords some of the country's best white water rafting opportunities - a great way for adventurous travellers to interact with the landscape.
One such example is a 10km stretch of the the exuberant Sarapiqui River, around two hours from the village of San Miguel de Sarapiqui. Along the route you will pass through the lush rainforest through more than 30 rapids, some with evocative names like “The Pipeline,” “The Terminator,” and “Dos Locos”. There will be a stop half-way to rest for a while and eat some refreshing tropical fruit with the rest of your group, before you take on the second half.
Closer to the volcano is Río Balsa, around 30 minutes from La Fortuna. These class 2 and 3 rapids are ideal for first-timers and families alike to experience some rafting through delightful jungle landscapes. The region offers both fun rolling rapids and tranquil river pools, set in an isolated river canyon. During the experience you should also look out for some of the wildlife that reside here, including monkeys, sloths and a variety of exotic birds.
Full safety equipment and briefings and instruction by trained guides will be provided in both cases.
