Quito & Otavalo Market Days 1 - 3

Itinerary Description

Day 1 - Fly from London to Quito

Take a daytime flight to Quito, arriving the same evening, where you will be met by our representative and taken to your hotel. This is also the opportunity for our guide to provide advice, run through your programme and answer any questions you may have.

Day 2 - Guided tour of Quito

Today you have an included morning tour of Quito, including the old part of the city, San Francisco main square, the Presidential Palace, churches, fabulous colonial architecture and a visit to the Gold Museum. The rest of the day is at leisure in Quito. (B)

Day 3 - Visit Otavalo market

We take a trip to the Andean town of Otavalo to visit its colourful market, where men and women with long plaited hair, dressed in their traditional clothes, sell all types of weavings, handicrafts and homegrown produce. (B)

Itinerary Description

Day 4 - Andean mountains to Riobamba

Early morning start today along the Andean mountains, stopping at a local hacienda. We visit the local market at Latacunga or Saquisilli and continue along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, affording stunning views of the towering snow capped peaks. The road passes small villages and a patchwork of fields and crops arriving at Riobamba, a city embraced by majestic volcanoes. (B,L)

Day 5 - Devil's Nose train journey

Transfer to the railway station for a spectacular train journey along mountainsides and precipices on the Devil's Nose Railway, a zigzagging Trans-Andean railway that climbs more than 500 meters in less than 12 km with steep ascents and descents. It today remains an impressive piece of engineering. While recovering from the mind-blowing descent you will enjoy the views of the narrow gorge of river Chanchán and will have the chance to learn a bit about the traditions and worldview of the Puruhuas in Sibambe.

After a picnic lunch we continue on the road south through lush vegetation to the colonial city of Cuena, visiting the fascinating Inca fortress of Ingapirca en route. (B,L)

Day 6 - Guided tour of Cuenca

This morning enjoy a guided tour of the elegant colonial city of Cuenca, with its cobbled streets and relaxing charm, visiting the flower market, tree lined plazas, the magnificent cathedral and Panama hat workshop. (B)

Day 7 - Cajas National Park

Today we journey west into the mountains through Cajas National Park, stopping on the way to walk and enjoy the scenery dotted with lagoons. We have an included typical lunch at a small hosteria and continue to the coastal city of Guayaquil, where we take a short tour and stay overnight on a bed and breakfast basis. (B,L)

Itinerary Description

Day 8 - Fly to the Galapagos Islands 

Fly to the Galapagos Islands and transfer to your chosen cruise ship for a 7-night cruise. First class cruises are aboard the M/Y Eric, Letty and Flamingo I and Tourist Class cruises are operated by the comfortable M/Y Samba. All cruises are on a full board basis, with daily excursions led my knowledgeable local naturalists. (B,L,D)

Days 9-14 - Galapagos cruise with daily guided excursions

Your cruise includes guided excursions every morning and afternoon including walks on the islands, swimming and snorkelling. Each activity is accompanied by our expert Naturalist guides to ensure you see as much friendly wildlife as possible, such as basking marine iguanas, waved albatrosses, blue and red footed boobies, 500lb tortoises and friendly sea lions. Day 15 - Departure

Flight back to mainland Ecuador, to connect with the return overnight flight to the UK. (B)

Arrive in the UK in the morning.

Cruises -

The Samba was built in Holland with teak decks in 1966 it is now a perfectly well converted cruise yacht to explore the Galapagos Islands. She accommodates 14 guests, a perfect number to enjoy the magic of the Islands with privacy and flexibility. Its professional, experienced and friendly crew and naturalist guide are devoted to showing you everything that makes the Galapagos Islands such a unique and special environment.

On the main deck there is an outside area with reading, resting and also eating space; and inside, there is a dining salon with library with TV/VCR and Stereo. Here is where briefings and conference-talks are given and planning about next day activities. The upper deck has an outside dinning area and sun protection, ideal for watching the abundant bird and marine life. The Foredeck has enough space for sun bathing or just to relax.

The ample and comfortable space on deck makes this boat ideal for nature and photography cruises. One naturalist guide  presents an evening briefing on the Galapagos wildlife and activities and accompanies guests on the morning and afternoon excursions on the islands.

The accommodation includes all meals (Full Board), all transport, daily guided excursions, while drinks and the Galapagos Park Fee of usd 100.00 per person are extra.

There is snorkelling equipment available aboard available for hire but wetsuits need to be requested and ordered in advance.Both are payable locally. Departures on Tuesdays.
