Set in the foothills of the Himalayas, a former British hill station and famous for its Toy Train.

Darjeeling is located in northern India in the state of West Bengal. The town is famous as a summer hill station for the British Raj and as such has many examples of British colonial architecture. The setting is quite beautiful, backed by Mount Kanchenjunga and the rolling hills full of tea plantations producing the world famous Darjeeling tea. There are over 70 tea gardens in Darjeeling where you can enjoy this light and distinctive tea in a relaxed environment.

A visit should include experiencing the sunrise at Tiger Hill which is famous for its magnificent views over Kanchenjunga and eastern Himalayan peaks. Other points of interest in the mountains are the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the adjacent Himalayan Zoological Park which is a high altitude wildlife park home to several high altitude animals.

The famous narrow gauge Toy Train was constructed in 1881. It is well worth a trip that takes you to Ghoom Monastery, which enshrines an image of the Maitreya Buddha.
