The cities of Srinagar and Amritsar are located in the mountainous regions of the Kashmir Valley and Punjab and their scenic beauty is a massive draw for travellers.

Srinagar is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It lies in an elevated position over 5000 feet above sea level in the Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus, and Dal and Anchar lakes. The city is known for its natural environment, gardens, waterfronts and houseboats. It really is a beautiful city to spend a few days, exploring the many mosques and temples including Jami Masjid built in the 15th century. Dal Lake is lovely with its floating garden. There are also delightful gardens at Shalimar and Nishat.

The surrounding areas around Srinagar are also well worth exploring as they offer some of India's most beautiful mountain scenery. Visit Sonamarg and take a horse riding adventure to the Thajiwas Glacier. At the Gulmarg, observe the 'meadow of flowers' and trek through landscapes described as 'Heaven on Earth'.

Further south lies Amritsar, famous for its Golden Temple - the sacred Sikh sanctuary spread out in a vast complex around a huge water tank in the midst of which stands a marble sanctum where the holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth is reverently placed. The roof of the sanctum is gold-leafed. The community kitchen provides free meals to up to 10,000 pilgrims or visitors in a day.
