Acclimatisation Day
Today we go for an interesting day hike to Khumjung. We climb up to the famous airstrip at Syangboche. Just above the airstrip is the Everest View Hotel, with great views of the highest mountains on Earth. The Khumjung valley is surrounded by the snowy peaks of Kongde and Thamserku and the sacred peak Khumbila, hosts a well known monastery that houses a yeti scalp. We also visit Hillary School which is loacted at the same site. After having lunch and spending some time in Khumjung, we walk back down to Namche Bazzar.
Wednesday, 25 September 2024
Debouche to Dingboche
After breakfast in Namche, we start our trek towards Tengboche. The trek has a few ups and downs with magnificent views of the great Himalayas. We enjoy the hike until we stop and relax for lunch. After lunch we start walking through the pine forest for about 2 more hours to reach Tyangboche. Tyangboche is a great place for close up views of Ama-Dablam which has the biggest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region. We continue further to Debouche to spend the night. Approx 5 hours walking today.
Thursday, 26 September 2024
Dingboche
A very different day from the previous day we are now on the wide rounded slopes of the lower valley gently ascending to Orsho before crossing the river and return to the vibrant village of Dingboche and our lodge. Approx 5 hours walking today.
Friday, 27 September 2024
Acclimatization Day to Chukkung
To help our adjustment to the ever increasing altitude we spend two nights at the same sleep height. So today is free for a morning walk up the Imja khola valley towards Chukkung and the glittering folds of glacier visible opposite.
Saturday, 28 September 2024
Trek to Lobuche
After breakfast, we climb up past the chortens on the ridge above and take a gently rising path on the fell side above the main valley toward the mouth of the Khumbu glacier. We stop at Thugla for lunch then press on for a short but steep climb to attain the side of the glacier. From here it’s a flatish couple of hours to Lobuche. Approximate walking 6 hours today.
Sunday, 29 September 2024
Gorak Shep and Base Camp
We start early and trek up the valley following the rocky moraine path, view icy glacial ponds and icebergs down below of the Khumbu glacier. After the last rocky moraine dunes, a short downhill walk brings you to Gorakshep, the flat field below Kala Patthar (5545m) and Mt. Pumori (7145m.) Gorakshep is the location of the original Everest Base Camp with the new camp being further up the valley. The trail winds through a rocky path and the Khumbu glacier. The view of Nuptse, Lho-La and Khumbutse appears at the front of you. Sometimes an avalanche can be seen on the way. This is the true highlight of our trek; a truly great moment. We retrace our steps back passing through the Khumbu glacier with magnificent views of Lobuche, Cholatse, Mt. Pumori and Tabuche. Approximately 8 hours walking today.
Monday, 30 September 2024
Ascent of Kala Patthar & Pheriche
Early morning ascent of Kala Patar (5140m) to catch the dramatic views from Kala Patthar and witness the first light of day caress the peaks of the mountains, particularly, Mt. Everest. Later, descend to Pheriche. We have a cheeky climb up to the glacier side, then start to head down to Lobuche, down again to Thugla and then the final walk down the valley to our lodge for the night at Pheriche. Approximately 8 hours walking today.
Tuesday, 01 October 2024
Pheriche to Kyangjuma
We start our downhill walk to Pangboche and continue further down to Deboche. From here we walk uphill to the crest of the ridge to the monastery at Tengboche. We then descend to Phunki Tenga. Re-crossing the river we have a last sustained pull back up to Kyangjuma and then it’s along and around to Namche. Approximately 6 hours walking today.
Wednesday, 02 October 2024
Kyangjuma to Monjo
The trail to Namche Bazaar clings to the steep wooded slope beyond Kyangjuma, winding through several bends. We lookout for wildlife such as mountain goats, snow leopards, and colourful pheasants while passing through the forest by the trail. A steep descent from Namche Hill leads to the suspension bridge crossing the Dudh Kosi river near the confluence of the Dhudh Koshi and the Bhote Koshi Rivers. We cross the Dudh Koshi River twice at separate locations before reaching Monjo. We are out of the Sagarmatha National Park after exiting from its official entrance near Monjo and finally reach Monjo Village. Approximately 6 hours walking today.
Thursday, 03 October 2024
Monjo to Lukla
Most of the trail today is flat; although we will have some downhill walk and brief ascents too. We further enjoy a combo of open plains, rhododendron and pine forests, and in the distant background Kwangde peak. As we walk through the Sherpa villages, we notice an impressive display of faith in Buddhism and cultural practices associated with it as prayer stones dot the landscape and prayer flags flap in the wind. We cross the Dhud Koshi River three times through the prayer flags strewn suspension bridges and also cross one of its tributaries, Thado Koshi once. The final ascent of about 45 minutes from Chheplung takes us to Lukla. Approximately 6 hours walking today.
