Experience the mighty Amazon

Today we take a flight over the Andean mountains to the Amazon basin towards Puerto Maldonado. Nothing can prepare you for the excitement you will feel arriving in the vast, green wilderness - the lungs of the world. On arrival you will be taken to the pier on the Tambopata river to board a motorised canoe for a short journey to your Amazon Lodge, where we stay for 3 nights in thatched-roof wooden bungalows (with netting and private facilities) on a full board basis including daily excursions. Rest of today is spent at your lodge where you can relax. The days ahead will be one of the most stimulating and memorable experiences you will ever have and one your family will treasure forever.

Explore the rainforest

Up early this morning to discover the rainforest waking up. Hear the sounds of the bird and other wildlife and observe and understand the unique flora and fauna of the rainforest. Admire gigantic trees stretching high above. Later today, we visit a local village and get an insight to how these local tribes live. Opportunity for the family to kayak on the river, go fishing or relax at the lodge. This evening, experience the rainforest at night with your local guide.

Riverboat wildlife adventure

We take to the water today in a combination of motorised river boats and local canoes. We explore the tributaries of the river which depending on the time of year you visit may be flooded (a fascinating experience). Look out for howler monkeys, macaws and caiman.

Refugio Amazonas is a 32-bedroom lodge four hours from the Puerto Maldonado airport. It is ideal for science enthusiasts, soft adventurers and families. Refugio Amazonas is located in a 200-hectare private reserve within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve.

With varnished tropical hardwood floors, rooms are 45 square meters, and have an open verandah that looks out into a roadless, wild tropical rainforest preserve. They are equipped with a mosquito net over large, comfortable beds, two hypoallergenic pillows per person, a hammock, and a reading table. All rooms have electricity 3 times per day and guests are offered an eco-friendly toiletries kit upon arrival.

The wildlife in the area is remarkable, from giant and colourful macaws, to toucans, parrots, tapirs, tamarind monkeys, owls, Southern Amazon Red squirrels, as well as a large variety of monkeys. Reserva Amazonica also holds the world record for ant species in a single place (362 species).

The lodge offers spacious facilities and well-equipped private cabins, guaranteeing guests an authentic, safe and comfortable stay in the rainforest, combining cozy accommodations with warm hospitality, a dedication to conservation and the opportunity to discover magnificent naturally camouflaged wildlife in the jungle.

The lodge boasts 30 private cabanas and 3 suites built with local materials in native style. Service areas are located in a two story wooden pavilion with a cathedral ceiling housing the dining room, bar, the main lounge and a mezzanine over looking the rainforest, where visitors can relax while contemplating the unique scenery. 

Each day and evening there are excursions on offer, both along the river tributaries and along the paths in the forest. Night excursions are also a possibility. As well as viewing the native wildlife, guests also learn about the medicinal properties of the plants endemic to the area and learn more about life in the Amazon. There are also evening presentations.

Included Entrance Fee to the Tambopata Research Center. All meals are included (drinks are extra), as are explorations part of your itinerary (and additional ones are payable locally). Please note that guests can take a maximum of 10kg to the lodge, the rest can be left in the lodge's office in Puerto Maldonado.

Explore Machu Picchu and travel to Cusco

The morning is free to explore Machu Picchu. You may wish to climb Huayna Picchu, a steep climb but well worth it for the fantastic views of the valley and a different perspective of Machu Picchu. Alternatively, there is a gentle climb, back along the Inca Trail, to Intipunku the Gate of the Sun and the first sight one has of the complex if walking the Inca Trail. In the afternoon you travel to Cusco for a 3 night stay.
