Lima Days 1 - 2

Day 1 - Arrival in Lima

Itinerary Description

Day 1 - Arrival in Lima

Depart on the daytime, direct BA flight to Lima, arriving in the evening. You will be met at the airport by our representative who will take you to your hotel for a 2 night stay. On arrival you will have an introduction to the local area which is an opportunity for our guide to provide advice, explain your programme and answer any questions you may have.

Day 2 - Guided tour of Lima 

This morning we take a guided tour of Lima, entirely tailored to your family interests. Suggested sights to visit include the Presidential Palace, Plaza San Martín and the Larco Herrera Museum, with a fabulous collection of ancient artefacts from all over Peru. (B)

Lima - Tourist Hotel

This small contemporary hotel is located in the heart of Miraflores, with plenty of access to local conveniences such as restaurants and shops. The rooms are comfortable, spacious and modern although simple in character, and all with modern amenities such as WiFi, air conditioning and private facilities. Itinerary Description

Days 3 - Experience the mighty Amazon

Today we take a flight over the Andean mountains to the Amazon basin towards Puerto Maldonado. Nothing can prepare you for the excitement you will feel arriving in the vast, green wilderness - the lungs of the world. On arrival you will be taken to the pier on the Tambopata river to board a motorised canoe for a short journey to your Amazon Lodge, where we stay for three nights in thatched-roof wooden bungalows (with netting and private facilities) on a full board basis including daily excursions. Rest of today is spent at your lodge where you can relax. The days ahead will be one of the most stimulating and memorable experiences you will ever have and one your family will treasure forever. Day 4 - Explore the rainforest

Up early this morning to discover the rainforest waking up. Hear the sounds of the bird and other wildlife and observe and understand the unique flora and fauna of the rainforest. Admire gigantic trees stretching high above. Later today, we visit a local village and get an insight to how these local tribes live. Opportunity for the family to kayak on the river, go fishing or relax at the lodge. This evening, experience the rainforest at night with your local guide.

Day 5 - Riverboat wildlife adventure

We take to the water today in a combination of motorised river boats and local canoes. We explore the tributaries of the river which depending on the time of year you visit may be flooded (quite an amazing experience). Look out for howler monkeys, macaws and caiman. (B,L,D)

Posada Amazonas

Tambopata Amazon Lodges - Tourist Lodge

Posada Amazonas is a 30-bedroom rainforest lodge perfect for your first taste of the Amazon’s natural wonders. Despite being relatively close to Puerto Maldonado, the Posada Amazonas offers ample opportunities to see wildlife such as squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, parrots and macaws. Native guides and naturalists are always on hand to answer your questions about the rainforest ecosystem or the local community.

The comfort rooms have lovely, varnished tropical hardwood floors, are 45 square meters, and have an open verandah that looks out into a roadless, wild tropical rainforest preserve. They are available as singles, doubles or twins, and each is equipped with a mosquito net over large, comfortable beds, two hypoallergenic pillows per person, a hammock, and a reading table.

Refugio Amazonas

Tambopata Amazon Lodges - First Lodge

Refugio Amazonas is a 32-bedroom lodge four hours from the Puerto Maldonado airport. It is ideal for science enthusiasts, soft adventurers and families. Refugio Amazonas is located in a 200-hectare private reserve within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve.

With varnished tropical hardwood floors, rooms are 45 square meters, and have an open verandah that looks out into a roadless, wild tropical rainforest preserve. They are equipped with a mosquito net over large, comfortable beds, two hypoallergenic pillows per person, a hammock, and a reading table. All rooms have electricity 3 times per day and guests are offered an eco-friendly toiletries kit upon arrival.

Reserva Amazonica

Tambopata Amazon Lodges - Deluxe Lodge

The wildlife in the area is remarkable, from giant and colourful macaws, to toucans, parrots, tapirs, tamarind monkeys, owls, Southern Amazon Red squirrels, as well as a large variety of monkeys. Reserva Amazonica also holds the world record for ant species in a single place (362 species).

The lodge offers spacious facilities and well-equipped private cabins, guaranteeing guests an authentic, safe and comfortable stay in the rainforest, combining cozy accommodations with warm hospitality, a dedication to conservation and the opportunity to discover magnificent naturally camouflaged wildlife in the jungle.

The lodge boasts 30 private cabanas and 3 suites built with local materials in native style. Service areas are located in a two story wooden pavilion with a cathedral ceiling housing the dining room, bar, the main lounge and a mezzanine over looking the rainforest, where visitors can relax while contemplating the unique scenery. 

Each day and evening there are excursions on offer, both along the river tributaries and along the paths in the forest. Night excursions are also a possibility. As well as viewing the native wildlife, guests also learn about the medicinal properties of the plants endemic to the area and learn more about life in the Amazon. There are also evening presentations.

Included Entrance Fee to the Tambopata Research Center. All meals are included (drinks are extra), as are explorations part of your itinerary (and additional ones are payable locally). Please note that guests can take a maximum of 10kg to the lodge, the rest can be left in the lodge's office in Puerto Maldonado.

Day 6 - Sacred Valley

Fly to Cusco, high in the mountains and transfer to the "Sacred Valley of the Incas" staying for four nights in the heartland of the Inca Empire. Rest of the day relaxing at your chosen hotel. (B)

Day 7 - Discover the Sacred Valley

Today we take a full day guided tour of the Sacred Valley including Chinchero local market, the Moray ruins, the extra-ordinary Maras pre-Inca salt pans, the fortress of Ollantaytambo and the ruins at Pisac. We end the day admiring the spectacular sunset at the ruins overlooking the valley. (B,L)

Day 8 - Choose you own family adventure

The Sacred Valley offers a wide variety of activities for adults, teenagers and children to enjoy including walks in the countryside, river rafting and horse riding. (B)

Day 9 - Trekking in the Sacred Valley

Take a trek in the fabled hills of the Sacred Valley, or relax at your hotel. (B)

Pakaritampu

Sacred Valley of the Incas - Tourist Hotel

The Pakaritampu Hotel is located in Ollantaytambo in the heart of the Sacred Valley; ideally situated for exploring the Sacred Valley, starting the Inca Trail, and taking the train to Aguas Calientes. The hotel has large gardens hosting a variety of local plants and flowers and is a series of four separate buildings, built according to the architectural style of Cuzco. Day 10 - Guided tour of Machu Picchu 

Travel aboard the "Vistadome" train from the Sacred Valley to the Aguas Calientes village located at the foot of Machu Picchu. This is a spectacular journey through a dramatic and changing landscape with some fantastic views. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will be met by your guide and travel via a winding road up the mountain before finally glimpsing the magical site of Machu Picchu. You will be given a guided tour of the site to learn about the history and culture of the Incas. Staying for 1 night in the valley bellow. (B)

Day 11 - Explore Machu Picchu & travel to Cusco

The morning is free to explore Machu Picchu. You may wish to climb Huayna Picchu, a steep climb but well worth it for the fantastic views of the valley and a different perspective of Machu Picchu. Alternatively, there is a gentle climb, back along the Inca Trail, to Intipunku the Gate of the Sun and the first sight one has of the complex if walking the Inca Trail. In the afternoon you travel to Cusco for a three nights stay. (B)
