Day 1 - Arrival in Lima

Direct flight to Lima on a Friday, arriving the same day in the evening, and staying for 2 nights.

Day 2 - Tour of Lima

Afternoon tour of the city including the historic centre. Visit the Presidential Palace, Plaza San Martín and the Larco Herrera Museum, with a fabulous collection of ancient artifacts from all over Peru.

Day 3 - Flight to Iquitos

Transfer to the airport for a flight to Iquitos, an area in the Amazon Basin only accessible by air. Transfer to La Amatista river boat, and embrak on a 5 night journey exploring the rainforest along the river, on daily excursions with expert naturalist guides. Comfortable accomodation with air conditioning, private facilities, daily guided excursions and full board.

 

Day 4-5 Maranon River

Today takes us down the Maranon River. As you travle to the Pacaya Samira National Reserve you witness the ever-changing panorama of jungle life. There is possibility of seeing Macaws, Sloths, Monkeys and the legendary Pink River Dolphins. Explore the Zapote lake and fish for piranhas using traditional Amazonian technique. Early morning bird-watching excursion in the forest, followed by a boattrip to look for Giant Water Lillies. Learn about conservation projects at a private reserve, with picnic lunches within the forest clearing.

 

Day 6 - Hanging bridges walkway

In the morning we hike along trails, learning about the medicinal use of plants and looking for the famous Poison Dart frog. The hanging bridges walkway will also give a spectacular perspective on the jungle from above, and the wildlife activity in the forest canopy. Learn about the ancient cultures and beliefs of the Amazonian peoples in a recreation of a Shamanic Ceremony. Evening tour to see sunset over the Amazon and listen to the nighttime chorus of wildlife and insects, looking for caimans, trantulas and snakes and anakonda.

 

Day 7 - Canoe trip along the tributary Yanayaquillo River

Canoe trip along the tributary Yanayaquillo River into Pacaya Samiria Reserve to look for wildlife including toucans and macaws. Afternoon visit to a local Amazonvillage to learn about the native culture of the forest.

Days 8 - 10

Day 8 - Disembark & Fly to Cusco

Day 8 - Disembark & Fly to Cusco

Disembark and transfer to the airport in Iquitos for the flight back to Lima. Connect with a flight to Cusco, and transfer to the hotel in the Urubamba Valley, staying for three nights.

 

Days 9-10 Exploring Sacred Valley of the Incas

Two days of excursions in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, visiting the Inca village of Ollantaytambo with its hillside fortess, Pisac ruins and the colourful market where local farmers trade their produce and shops offer local weavings in soft alpaca wool. Next day visit the local market and weavers collective at Chinchero, the concentric circular Inca crop labaratory at Moray and the Ancient salt pans at Maras, with a leisurely walk down into the valley.

Day 11 - Train Journey to Machu Picchu 

Board the Vistadome train at Ollantaytambo for the journey to Machu Picchu. This is a spectacular journey through a dramatic and changing landscape with some fantastic views. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will be met by your guide and travel via a winding road up the mountain before finally glimpsing Machu Picchu. After lunch at Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge you will have a private guided tour of the extensive archaeological site to learn about the history and culture of the Incas.

 

Day 12 - Explore Machu Picchu & Return to Cusco

The morning is free to explore. You may wish to climb Huayna Picchu, a steep climb but well worth it for the fantastic views of the valley and a different perspective of Machu Picchu. Alternatively, there is a gentle climb, back along the Inca Trail, to Intipunku: the Gate of the Sun, and the first sight one has of the complex if walking the Inca Trail. In the afternoon, take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes and the train back to Ollantaytambo Station and on to Cusco.

Days 13-14 Cusco excursions

Cusco was the hub of the Inca Empire, and the streets are still lined with Inca-built stone walls and many people maintain their Quechua-speaking  culture. Visit the Spanish-era Cathedral, the main square ( Plaza de Armas) , and Qorikancha ( Temple of the Sun), and Inca temple upon which Spanish church was later built. Continue to the nearby Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, where huge pieces of stone fit together with such precision that no cement is required.

 

Day 15 - Travel back to UK

Afternoon flight to Lima connecting with your return flight home, arriving the following day.
