Hidden in the Tibetan mountains, the sacred Yamdrok Lake is a stunning sight and a deeply sacred place for Tibetans.

Nestled between dark mountains at 4,441 metres above sea level, the shimmering turquoise water of Yamdrok Lake adds a splash of colour to the Tibetan landscape. Seen from up high, it is a sensational sight and evokes a sense of wonder in visitors. It is no wonder then that the devout locals attribute holy powers to the lake, believing that the spirit of protective deities lie within and indicate to high ranking monks where the reincarnation of the next Dalai Lama can be found.

Yamdrok Lake is reached via a drive through the mountains from Lhasa and is a great way to venture out of the capital and see some of the regional landscape. It is visited on the way to the monasteries of Gyantse and Shigatse as part of a two hour drive from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp on our Yak tour of Tibet. The lake can also be combined with a visit to see the afternoon monk debates in Sera Monastery, though must be arranged beforehand to ensure all necessary permits can be obtained.
