When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on whether you prioritise sunshine, wildlife, or fewer crowds. The country has two main seasons: the dry season from December to April and the green (rainy) season from May to November. Conditions also vary between the Pacific coast, the Caribbean coast, and the central highlands.
December to April - Dry Season (Pacific Coast & Central Highlands)
This is the most popular time to visit Costa Rica. Days are sunny and dry, especially along the Pacific coast, with daytime temperatures of 28-32°C at the beaches and around 24-26°C in the highlands such as Monteverde and San Jose. The dry season is ideal for visiting Manuel Antonio, Guanacaste, and Nicoya Peninsula beaches, as well as for hiking in Arenal and Moteverde. As this is peak travel season, particularly around Christmas, New Year, and Easter, hotels and national parks are busy, and prices are higher.
May to November - Green Season (Pacific Coast & Highlands)
Afternoon showers are common, especially from September to October, but mornings are usually clear. The landscapes are at their greenest, waterfalls are full, and wildlife is more active. Temperatures remain warm - 27-30°C on the Pacific coast and 22-25°C in the highlands. May, June, and November are considered "shoulder months," offering a balance of fewer crowds, lower prices, and good conditions. Heavy rains in September and October can make some rural roads muddy or impassable, but this is an excellent time for surfing and for experiencing the rainforest at its most vibrant.
Year-Round - Caribbean Coast
The Caribbean side (including Tortuguero and Cahuita) does not follow the same dry/rainy pattern as the Pacific. Rain is more evenly spread throughout the year, though September and October are often the driest and sunniest months here. Average temperatures are 28-30°C year-round. The Caribbean coast is excellent for turtle nesting in Tortuguero (July-October for green turtles, March-May for leatherbacks).
Year-Round - Wildlife Highlights
Costa Rica is famous for its biodiversity, and different seasons bring different opportunities. From December to March, humpback whales migrate along the Pacific coast. Sea turtle nesting occurs at different times of year on both coasts, while birdwatching is rewarding year-round, with peak activity in the green season.
