The only land-locked country in South America has much to offer: culturally-rich capital Asuncion, 15 national parks, fascinating Jesus and Trinidad missions, and birdwatching and nature in the vast wilderness of the Chaco.

Paraguay is the only land-locked country in South America, located on the tropic of Capricorn bordering Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. Although still lesser-visited by international travellers, there is good reasons to include a visit on your trip. The highlights include: exploring the capital city Asuncion with its many parks and famous Plaza de los Heroes; visiting the mighty Itaipu hydroelectric dam, one of the largest in the world; get an understanding of jesuit life at the well-preserved Jesus and Trinidad missions; explore one or more of the countries relatively untouched national parks; and go birdwatching in the Chaco - the ‘desert of Paraguay - and a mix of savanna, scrub-forest, semi-desert and forest close to the Bolivian border.

The Guarani people were the original inhabitants of Paraguay, and indeed their language is still spoken and taught in schools to this day. However, the Spanish explorer Alejo Garcia founded the capital Asuncion in 1537 colonising Paraguay for the Spanish. In the 1600’s Jesuit missionaries arrived in an effort to convert the local tribes. Independence from the Spanish was achieved in 1811, after which, sadly, political turmoil ensued with local conflicts and dictators ruling often in brutal fashion. After the 2nd world war, dictator Alfredo Stroessner took power for 34 years, purging opponents. A military coup ended his rule in 1989 and today Paraguay is a functioning democracy with a positive future.

Paraguay is a bilingual country, with the majority of the population speaking Spanish and Guaraní. Perhaps the best time to visit are in the spring and autumn when temperatures are not too hot or too cold. One interesting fact - the Paraguay flag is the only country flag in the world to have different designs on each side of the flag!
