Chile has the Atacama mountain desert in the North, the glaciers and fjords of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego in the south and a central, temperate Lake Region.

Chile boasts diverse landscapes and climate from desert in the north, through temperate lakes in the centre, to Patagonia glaciers in the south. Although on average only 180 kilometres wide, it stretches over 4,000 kilometres from north to south which, in European terms, represents a distance and range of climates from Norway’s icy northern tip to the barren sands of the Sahara Desert in Africa. In the central region you find fertile valleys well-known for their high quality wines, and serene lakes with a backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes and the Andes mountain range.

Santiago offers a rewarding mix of grand European architecture, contemporary restaurants, galleries and hotels and compelling 20th century history. Tucked away in the Pacific ocean, the enigmatic Moai statues of Easter Island.

Best time to Visit Chile

When is the best time to visit Chile?

Chile stretches over 4,000 kilometres from the Atacama Desert to Patagonia, encompassing a wide variety of climates. The best time to visit depends on which regions you plan to explore, from the northern deserts and central valleys to the glaciers of the far south.

October to March - Best for Patagonia and the Lake District

This is spring and summer in southern Chile and the prime season for exploring Patagonia, Torres del Paine National Park, and the Lakes Region. Days are long, temperatures range from 12-20°C, and trails are fully open for hiking and photography. Wildflowers bloom in November, and the landscape is lush and vibrant. January and February are the busiest months, so visiting in October-December or March offers milder weather and fewer crowds.

April to September - Quieter Season in the South, Ideal for the North

Autumn and winter bring colder temperatures and occasional rain in Patagonia, though the landscapes remain stunning and peaceful. This is also the best time to explore northern Chile, where the Atacama Desert enjoys clear skies, cool nights, and minimal rainfall. In the Lakes Region, trees turn golden from April to May, making it a scenic time for photography and wine-tasting in nearby valleys.

September to May - Best for the Central Valleys and Santiago

The central region, including Santiago, Valparaiso, and the Wine Valleys, experience a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers (25-30°C) and mild winters. The shoulder seasons of September-November and March-May are particularly pleasant, offering sunny days and fewer tourists, ideal for sightseeing, vineyards, and cultural exploration.

Year-Round - Atacama Desert and Easter Island

The Atacama Desert can be visited any time of year, with daytime temperature of 20-25°C and cooler nights. Winter (June-August) brings the clearest skies for stargazing, while summer is slightly warmer but still dry. Easter Island also offers a mild, subtropical climate all year, averaging 22-28°C perfect for exploring archaeological sites and beaches in any season.
