Santiago's modern district is home to sleek high-rise office and apartment buildings in metal and glass, home to high class restaurants and international businesses. The centre of the city around the Plaza de Armas is still a slightly ramshackle affair, with old men playing chess in the square, and government workers bustling around the turn of the century buildings of the various ministries and central bank. The Italian-designed Presidential Palace, 'La Moneda' is impressive in white stone and covers a whole city block, with a beautiful ceremonial square in front.
