Santiago de Chile is one of the most modern cities in Latin America, situated in an enviable position at the foot of the Andes in central Chile, at the point where the Mapocho and Maipo rivers meet. The towering snow-capped mountains is an incredible sight and gives the city an impressive setting.

Santiago's modern district is home to sleek high-rise office and apartment buildings in metal and glass, home to high class restaurants and international businesses. The centre of the city around the Plaza de Armas is still a slightly ramshackle affair, with old men playing chess in the square, and government workers bustling around the turn of the century buildings of the various ministries and central bank. The Italian-designed Presidential Palace, 'La Moneda' is impressive in white stone and covers a whole city block, with a beautiful ceremonial square in front.
