City tour and ruins of Cusco

Our day begins with a visit to the cathedral in the main square of Cusco and the Koricancha, the Spanish church built on Inca stone foundations. We then drive to the mountains above Cusco to visit the archaeological sites of Sacsayhuaman largest complex and most famous of the ruins surrounding Cusco is Sacsayhuaman, a mighty fortress, built using massive stones some of which weigh over 100 tons, and somehow fitted together so neatly that even now, after so many years and earthquakes, one can still not slip a knife blade between the pieces of this huge jigsaw puzzle.

We will also visit kenko and the Tambomachay ruins, which may have served as a military outpost or a spa resort for the Incan political elite. On the return we stop at a vantage point above Cusco for a superb view of the city and the surrounding mountains.

Andahuaylillas & Pikillacta Ruins

Leave Cusco early in the morning for a 40 minute drive until we reach Pikillacta, which is a huge sprawling site, one of the only ruins of a pre-Inca city in the Cusco region. It is attributed to the Wari culture, which emerged in the central highlands near present-day Ayacucho, flourished around 1000 AD, and may ultimately have been overwhelmed by the Incas. We then continue to Andahuaylillas village (3198 mts), a small town surrounded by mountains and the Vilcanota river which is known as the Urubamba river in the lower sections. We will visit the famous colonial church known as the "Sistine Chapel of America". Later enjoy the main square of Andahuaylillas before returning to Cusco. Its leaf rich trees of Pisonay (trees of Coral) and palm trees make this square a special place.
