A voyage on the Hondius is spends as much time ashore as possible. The itinerary is flexible, taking advantage of wildlife opportunities by using  zodiacs for both landings and cruises. Knowledgeable guides assist on these outings, providing detailed information. This is supplemented by lectures on board which covers topics such as wildlife, nature and history.

You will see and enjoy the following experiences on your cruise on the Hondius:

  • Humpback whales, Gentoo penguins and Adelie penguins.
  • Paradise Bay - a breathtakingly beautiful bay offering classic views of colossal ice formations and iconic Antarctic wildlife.
  • Kayaking - one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the beautiful blue-and-white world of the peaceful polar seas.
  • Snowshoeing - explore your way inland from the Polar shorelines with a wide variety of snowshoeing expeditions built for everyone.
  • Trekking - ascend the heights to enjoy spectacular views of the polar surroundings
  • Antarctic camping - few things get you closer to the Antarctic expedition experience than making camp, settling into your bivouac bag, and sleeping under the Southern Hemisphere stars.

Pleneau Island - directly southwest of  Lemaire Channel lies Pléneau Island, in the western reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula. Even at 1.5 km long (.93 miles) and 500 meters wide (1,640 feet), its rock is barely visible, almost entirely buried under mounds of snow and ice. Icebergs are what Pléneau Island is all about, and a zodiac cruise is the best way to see them. An otherworldly landscape of sky-blue bergs, spearing pinnacles, and vaulting ice arches dazzles the eye, distracted only by the occasional sunbathing leopard sealor surfacing whale.

Cuverville Island stands at the entrance of Errera Channel and is flanked by the precipitous mountains and glaciers of the Antarctic mainland. The island is a 252-meters high (826 feet) rock with a long shingle beach at its foot, home to a sizable colony of gentoo penguins.

About 6,500 breeding pairs of Gentoos call Cuverville home, composing the largest rookery on the Antarctic Peninsula. This population is recognised as an “Important Bird and Biodiversity Area”. But the flora is every bit as precious: Antarctic hairgrass (Deschampsia antarctica) and Antarctic pearlwort (Colobanthus quitensis) can also be found here.
