Yamdrok shimmers seductively, a sacred turquoise oasis in the dark mountains of Tibet.

One of the three sacred lakes of Tibet, Yamdrok shimmers seductively like a turquoise oasis in the stark Tibetan landscape. It is spectacularly located amid rolling hills, backed by snow-capped mountains, close to the town of Gyantse. Yamdrok is considered Tibetan people to be a place for protective deities and therefore is deemed to have special spiritual powers.

The lake is visited as part of our journey between Lhasa and Shigaste, en-route to Mount Everest. However, for those not venturing so far afield, it can be combined with the afternoon monk debates at Sera Monastery on a full day excursion from Lhasa.
