It is hard to believe now, but Hong Kong was once a collection of sleepy fishing communities. No where on Hong Kong Island can this heritage be better explored than at Aberdeen Harbour, right at the very bottom of the island. Skyscrapers stand in juxtaposition to the timeless fishing junks which gather here still serving as working vessels to around 5,000 fishermen.
You might like to enjoy a short sampan ride through the harbour to gain a better perspective of the area, or alternatively board a boat out to Lamma Island, where a large fishing community still makes a living and where hikes through exotic vegetation await. There is also another large fishing community at Tai O on the beautiful Lantau Island.
Aberdeen is well known for its large floating Jumbo Restaurant, a good place to enjoy a dim sum lunch, though it is somewhat touristy.
