San Jose & Irazú Volcano Days 1 - 2

Itinerary Description

Day 1 -  Departure from UK

Take a daytime direct BA flight to San Jose, arriving the same evening, where you will be met by our representative and taken to your hotel for 2 nights. This is also the opportunity for our guide to provide you advice, explain your programme and answer any questions you may have.

Day 2 - Irazú Volcano

With our local guide, you visit the Irazú Volcano, with its impressive green crater lake rising out of a desolate grey moon landscape. Continue on to the stunning Orosí Valley, where the Reventazón River cuts its swirling swathe through the surrounding mountains. We visit the Lankester Botanical Gardens, housing thousands of species of plants endemic to Costa Rica.

 

Don Carlos

San Jose - Tourist Hotel

Located in the oldest historical section of San José, the Hotel Don Carlos is a small, but significant part of Costa Rica's rich heritage. Hotel Don Carlos is situated in the perfect part of town. Itinerary Description

Day 3 - Transfer to Tortuguero Park

Morning transfer through the mountains to the pier where we take a river journey to our lodge deep in the Tortuguero National Park, where we stay for 3 nights.

Day 4 - Boat tour of Tortuguero Park

Accompanied by guides, we explore the area by boat in the backwaters and lagoons, observing the abundance of bird species and wildlife in this glorious jungle setting, home to spider monkeys, macaws, three toed sloths, toucans, caiman, otters and many other species.

Day 5 - At leisure

The setting at Tortuguero is tranquil so you can also unwind, take walks along the coast, the beach and the area surrounding the lodge. Perhaps visit the Caribbean Conservation Corporation, protecting the nearby nesting beach of the Atlantic green sea turtle and surrounding tropical rainforest. From July to October it may be possible to see turtles nesting on the beach, a quite magical sight.

Tortuga Lodge

Tortuguero - First Lodge

The Tortuga Lodge & Gardens was the first comfortable lodge built in the area and remains the most comfortable place to stay, with superior rooms (spacious screened, cross-ventilated, large bathrooms with hot showers, and fans) rocking chairs and hammocks in covered walkways outside all the rooms, an airy bar-restaurant built on the riverside, with veranda dining next to the water, and an adjoining swimming pool.

 

A solar energy system is used here, which is one of the reasons that the lodge has been recognized with ecotourism awards. Tortuga Lodge's dinning room and bar feature a shaded veranda; the dining has been called "the best in Costa Rica" by many of its guests. Tortuga Lodge's restaurant starts at the river dock and reluctantly moves inland.

The lodge is on 20 hectares of attractively landscaped gardens with ornamental tropical trees, palms, shrubs, orchids, and other flowers that attract birds, lizards, and butterflies.

Pachira Lodge

The Pachira Lodge is located only five minutes away from the entrance to Tortuguero National Park. This wild and remote area is only accessible by boat or plane and it takes 5 to 6 hours by land and boat from San Jose. Pachira Lodge offers 96 comfortable rooms with bamboo furniture and ceiling fans. The lodge has a nicely decorated restaurant, a bar, a refreshing turtle-shaped swimming pool, beautiful gardens, ranchos with hammocks to enjoy the jungle and canal views.

Mawamba River Lodge

Tortuguero - First Lodge

Nestled in the lush rainforest, the lodge is the ideal hideaway for nature lovers and the perfect place to discover the wonders of the Tortuguero National Park. All the spacious and comfortable rooms are built in wood to blend in with the exuberant jungle vegetation and all feature a private bathroom with hot water and ceiling fans and offer tranquil garden views. There is a family style restaurant where you eat 3 meals a day, a pool area, games room and palapas with hammocks tucked away in the gardens - perfect for relaxing!

Every evening, there are lectures on the Tortuguero area in the conference room and you are always free to investigate the 15-acres of private nature trails, featuring an open sky butterfly farm. The Lodge provides the transfer in & out by bus and boat, all meals, regular tours and taxes; But Entrance Fee to the National Park is not included.

Arenal Volcano Days 6 - 7

Day 6 - Transfer to Arenal

Our journey continues with a drive to Arenal, in the northern tropical lowlands, dominated by the picture-perfect cone of Arenal volcano. In the evening, weather permitting, witness the colourful lava flows from the volcano, quite a spectacle.

Day 7 - Arenal National Park

You have the full day in the park, go horse riding through the forest, walk on the hanging bridges trails through the rainforest canopy, relax in the hot springs, or take optional excursions, including a hike around the volcano to see the lava flows.

Arenal Lodge

The Arenal Lodge provides wonderful panoramic views of the Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake and is a perfect spot for watching unforgettable eruptions and lava flows which can be seen glowing at night. The lodge has a rustic ambiance and has been deliberately constructed to bring the outdoors inside; landscaped gardens full of ferns, flowers and orchids surround the rooms, bar and restaurant. Hiking and bird-watching are some of the activities you can enjoy at Arenal Lodge. Accommodations include room and breakfast.

Arenal Springs Resort is the ideal combination of modern comfort and exuberant tropical surrounding. The rooms are all in semi-detached bungalows spread over a wide area directly facing Arenal Volcano. Each room has a patio with seating, as well as air conditioning. Day 8 - Poás Volcano National Park

After breakfast, we drive to Poás Volcano National Park, where we witness the clouds of steam rising out of the depths of the active volcano, Poás. The road winds down to the Pacific lowlands before ascending again into the mountains to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, a cold and humid forest high in the mountains with great views of the Gulf of Nicoya and the Pacific. Check onto your chosen lodge or hotel for a 2 night stay.

Day 9 - Monteverde Cloud Forest 

A fascinating and beautiful half-day excursion, accompanied by expert local guides, in the surrounding Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The variety of climes is home to a fascinating number of birds and mammals, including the noisy howler monkeys and the resplendent quetzal. We explore the cloud forest from the forest floor and on treetop hanging walkways to obtain a birds eye view of this unique reserve. In the afternoon we visit the Butterfly Garden, a living laboratory of butterflies, snakes and frogs.

Fonda Vela

Monteverde Cloud Forest - First Hotel

The Fonda Vela Hotel is located in beautiful Monteverde, featuring six buildings within a 35 acre property and just a 15 minutes walk away from the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The views of the Gulf of Nicoya from the hotel's 1400 meters elevation are spectacular. All rooms have large windows with views of the forest, private bathroom and telephone. All 20 junior suites have a small refrigerator, table, king and queen-size beds, a comfortable sofa and 14 also have a TV. There are two restaurants, La Chimenea perfect for a relaxing evening meal.

Monteverde Lodge

The Monteverde Lodge is located in the Tilarán Mountain Range at 4,600 ft above sea level on the edge of the world's best known mid-elevation cloud forest. Nestled in the mountains adjacent to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Hotel Belmar, offers 22 rooms with spectacular views. With personalized service in a comfortable rustic atmosphere, the hotel has a distinctly Alpine style with its wooden panelling, and is still managed by the family of the original owners. The spacious rooms have all private balconies with seating, and large windows overlooking the valley: On a clear day you can also see the Pacific Ocean.

Extend your trip with a transfer south to the Pacific Coastal town of Manuel Antonio, staying for 3 nights at a hotel surrounded by rainforest and overlooking beaches and coves. Day 10 - Return to San Jose

Early morning transfer down the mountains and back to San José. Rest of the day at leisure enjoying your last night in Costa Rica. You can also choose to extend your trip and visit Manuel Antonio National Park, conveniently located on the Pacific Ocean with an excellent beach. Or go to San Gerardo de Dota for bird watching or the lush Turrialba Valley.

Day 11 - Fly back to the UK

Transfer to the airport for overnight British Airways flight back to the UK.
