Originally intended to protect a major nesting beach of the Atlantic green sea turtle, Tortuguero National Park now protects 77,032 acres or 30,812 hectares, one of the last large areas of tropical rain forest in Central America, accessible only by river and canal. It is a haven for birds and wildlife including three species of monkey, three-toed sloths, river otters, caiman, iguanas, 6 species of kingfishers, parrots and many more species.
