Explore the fascinating "Blue City", located on the edge of the Thar Desert.

Located in the foothills of a sandstone hillock, the city of Jodhpur seems like an oasis in the vast desert. The city is known as the "Sun City" for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all year. It is also referred to as the "Blue City" due to the vivid blue-painted houses near Mehrangarh Fort.  Being at the edge of the Thar Desert, life has been influenced by the desert peoples.

Explore the cultural highlights of Jodhpur with our expert local guide.

Jaswant Thada is a beautiful building made entirely of hand carved, milky-white marble. Admire the fabulous walls and domes and enjoy a warm glow that emanates from the polished rock, emitting a sunny and pleasant atmosphere.

Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 with high walls and gates, a network of courtyards and palaces including a museum that houses a splendid collection of items from the Maharajas, salvaged to display regally out of pride for their many conflicts warding off attackers.

Mandore garden has many cenotaphs of Jodhpur's former rulers. Instead of the usual chhatri-shaped cenotaphs typical of Rajasthan, these are built along the lines of a Hindu temple. They are four stories high, with fine columns and an elegant spire, all in red sandstone and are set in beautiful landscaped gardens. Nearby is the hall of heroes, dedicated to various deities and fabled Rajput folk heroes, whose statues are carved out of rock and painted in bright colours.

The ancient town of Osian feels like an oasis in the That Desert. Here, explore up to 15 beautifully preserved and sculpted temples. Created in the 8th and 9th centuries, no two temples are alike with beautifully decorated walls, shrines, sculptures and original use of stone.

Umaid Bhawan Palace is lavishly decorated with a gorgeous pink and white exterior. Part of the palace remains occupied with the current owners taking great care to maintain its magnificence. The Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum has a collection of rare clocks, stuffed leopards and amazing trophies.
