One of the main attractions within Arequipa is the Santa Catalina Convent, established in 1579.
Historic Origins
The Santa Catalina Convent is one of Arequipa’s most important landmarks. Founded in 1579, it reflects the traditional Moorish mudejar architectural style that was common during the colonial era.
Distinctive Architecture
The convent is well known for its brightly painted walls in vivid reds, blues, and earthy tones. These colours give the complex a unique and instantly recognisable character.
A Living Convent
Around 20 nuns still live within Santa Catalina today. However, much of the complex is open to the public and accessible for guided or self-guided visits.
A City Within a City
Covering an entire city block, the convent feels like a small walled city inside Arequipa. Its narrow alleyways, quiet courtyards, and hidden patios make it easy to explore — and easy to get lost without a guide.
Art and History
Santa Catalina houses an impressive collection of religious art dating back to the 16th century. These works offer a fascinating insight into Arequipa’s cultural and religious history.
