Located in the southern region of Peru, the Nazca Lines are ancient geoglyphs carved into the land in the Nazca Desert. Historians believe they were created between 500 BC and 500 AD. This ancient archeological site is a series of lines and outlines of plants, tress and animals dug into the desert. The animals are the most impressive, with figures including a whale, monkey, spider, dog, a huge condor, flamingo, parrot, lizard and the best preserved figure the Hummingbird - a gorgeous design perfectly made on a dark plateau located at one corner of the archaeological complex.

The reason for the outlines are subject to much speculation. Many scientists and archeologists believe they were ancient irrigation channels with the figures created to encourage rainfall and soil fertility. Others believe the lines an astronomical calendar. One rather far fetched interpretation from writer Erich von Daniken was that they are a landing site for UFO’s! In recent years, archaeologists have found more lines buried in the desert, adding to the sites immense popularity.

You can visit the Nazca Lines on a walking tour or by taking a flight to observe the geoglyphs from above.
There are no scheduled flights to Nazca, so we recommend a drive from Lima to Paracas where you would stay overnight. From Paracas, it is about 3 hours drive to the site. Observation flights are available from Pisco Airport in Paracas.
