Chinchero, Moray & Maras salt mines

An early start for a full day tour into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, We drive first to the small town of Chinchero. Here there is a local colourful and authentic market where indigenous people from the surrounding communities congregate to trade their goods. It is a lively, colourful and quite noisy affair that gives a real insight to trading in the area. Chinchero is particularly well-known for its woven handcrafts typical of the region.

From Chinchero we drive to the Moray ruins, used by the Incas as a type of open-air crop laboratory.

Our next stop is Maras pre-Inca salt mines located on a wide-open hill above the Urubamba Valley.

Pisac ruins, the market and Ollantaytambo

Enjoy a full day excursion including lunch visiting Pisac, a colonial town built on the ruins of an Inca citadel by Viceroy Francisco de Toledo. It stands at the entrance to the immensely fertile Sacred Valley. Here, enjoy the bustling market full of handicrafts and food.

It was the Spaniards that christened the Fortress of Ollantaytambo, the archaeological complex believed to have been a gigantic agricultural, administrative, social, religious and military centre. The town itself is geometrically perfect, with straight streets, trapezoidal doors and an Inca drainage system. Quite fascinating.

Willoq and Patacancha Villages

Today we visit the villages of Willoq and Patacancha, high in the Patacancha Valley. According to historians, the people of Willoq with their traditional red ponchos and shawls are the direct descendants of the last rulers of imperial Cusco, and remain today one of the Andean communities least affected by Western influence.

The Willoq community is also well known for its weavers and the quality of the textiles is still a product of patience, knowledge and the skilled weaver. The primitive back strap loom, unaltered for centuries, is still used to weave even the finest textiles.

Lunch is included today.

Tour of Cusco and the surrounding archaeological sites

Today enjoy a half day tour of Cusco visiting the cathedral in the main square and the Koricancha, the Spanish church built on Inca stone foundations. The Cathedral, believed to be built on the foundations of the Palace of Viracocha. We then drive to the mountains above Cusco to visit the archaeological sites of Sacsayhuaman and Kenko.

The largest complex and most famous of the ruins surrounding Cusco is Sacsayhuaman, a mighty fortress, built using massive stones some of which weigh over 100 tons, and somehow fitted together so neatly that even now, after so many years and earthquakes, one can still not slip a knife blade between the pieces of this huge jigsaw puzzle. We will also check out Tambomachay ruins, which may have served as a military outpost or a spa resort for the Incan political elite; and Puca Pucara site, a red granite huge fortress. On the return we stop at a vantage point above Cusco for a superb view of the city and the surrounding mountains,
