Travel to Huaraz, Callejon de Huaylas

Morning departure by coach on an 8 hour journey to Huaraz in the Callejon de Huaylas valley. On arrival, transfer to you chosen hotel or lodge for a 3-night stay including breakfast.

The Callejón de Huaylas is an Andean valley stretching for 150km in the Ancash region of Peru. It is bordered by two mountain ranges, the snow-covered Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra. The highest peak Nevado Huascaran (6,746m) in Peru is located in Cordillera Blanca above the town of Yungay. The region has a rich pre-Inca history and is also a draw for travellers interested in trekking.

Chavin de Huantar

After breakfast, we explore the Cordillera Blanca via the Cahuish Tunnel to visit Chavín de Huántar, South America's oldest and most advanced culture, and one of the six independent centres of civilisation in world prehistory. Chavín's monumental granite pyramids and ceremonial plazas are linked by stone-carved staircases and platforms. Subterranean chamber complexes, known as galleries, are the most unusual Chavín architectural style.

Visit the Lanzón Gallery with its supreme deity of Chavín, a large stone idol called Lanzón that is finely carved with human, Jaguar, Anaconda, and Harpy Eagle iconography. Sophisticated stone-carved friezes, columns, giant heads, and astronomic representations are a puzzle for Andean archaeo-astronomers. Box lunch included.
