The remote eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula offers snow-free landscapes, icefields and extraordinary wildlife and birds.

In 1823, the British sealer, James Weddell discovered the vast eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula and named it King George IV Sea. Eighty years later, a German historian changed the name to the Weddell Sea.

The landscapes in the summer months are different from the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula, with mountain ranges with no covering of snow or ice or glaciers tumbling into the sea. The remoteness and lack of snow cover allows wildlife to thrive.

Due to the colder temperatures and number of packed ice fields to navigate, The Weddell Sea is more remote and lesser-visited. However, it is possible to take an expedition cruise to the Weddell Sea on ships with ice-cutting capabilities.
