Although Bolivia has been landlocked since the late 19th century, it continues to maintain a navy - a symbol of national pride and a reminder of the coastline it lost to Chile during the War of the Pacific.
Bolivia's Symbolic Navy
Based at Lake Titicaca, Bolivia's navy trains and conducts ceremonial duties on the country's half of the lake. Naval vessels patrol the waters, and recruits complete their training on board, despite the absence of a coastline.
A Hope for the Future
For many Bolivians, the navy represents the enduring hope that one day of the country will regain access to the sea. The institution serves botha symbolic and functional role, reinforcing Bolivia's maritime identify and presence, even without an ocean.
