Ilheus is a large provincial city 280 miles south of Salvador on the coast. Previously one of the largest cocoa exporters of the country, it is now famed for its nearby beaches, which attract thousands of visitors every year, as well as the interesting mix of old and modern architecture. There are a number of daily flights from Sao Paulo, although not from Rio de Janeiro.
