A sea of towering powerful limestone pillars stand side-by-side amid lakes, ponds, forests, caves, underground rivers and waterfalls
A must see is the Stone Forest, near to Yunnan's capital Kunming, one of China's natural wonders. A sea of striking limestone pillars rise up amongst lakes, ponds, forests, caves, underground rivers and waterfalls, to create a unique landscape. The area is explored by following a series of winding paths, leading from one breathtaking vista to the next. The entire area was believed to have once been submerged below the sea, but as the waters receded and the ground rose, the extraordinary karst landscape revealed itself, exposing it to the elements that have carved its bizarre and extraordinary rock formations over centuries. The park is split between the Greater and Lesser forests, as well as the quieter Naigu dolomite rock forest.
Kunming is known as the City of Eternal Spring thanks to its temperate year-round climate and attractive blooming flowers. Highlights include the attractive central lake park and some impressive temples.
