Colombia is a country of many large cities, amongst these, the two most important and interesting could not be any more different.
Bogotá is a modern metropolis that is dramatically located at high altitude in the centre of the country, on a high plateau surrounded by the Andes Mountains. It is a fast-moving, cosmopolitan and vibrant capital city, with something to interest just about everyone. The main attractions here are the world-class Museum of Gold, the colonial district of La Candelaria and the cable cars which soar over the city up to the top of Cerro Monserrate. Nearby is the unusual underground salt cathedral in Zipaquirá and the city also enjoys a burgeoning culinary and cafe scene, as well as its famed nightlife.
In total contrast, Cartagena enjoys an altogether slower pace of life. Situated on the Caribbean coast in the north of Colombia, gentle warm breezes, exotic fruits of all varities and languid palm trees define one of South America's most beautiful cities. Within the well-preserved city walls are streets full of colourful colonial architecture, often with lush courtyards and wooden balconies enveloped by tropical foliage.
