The Arenal Volcano National Park is not only known for its volcanic landscapes, but also for its incredible biodiversity - especially birdlife. The region is a paradise for nature lovers, home to vibrant species such as the blue-and-yellow macaw, seen in the forest canopies or perched near the treetops.
Birdwatching in Arenal
With over 500 bird species recorded in the area, Arenal is one of the top birding spots in Costa Rica. In addition to macaws, you may encounter toucans, parrots, oropendolas, hummingbirds, and the colourful motmot. Early morning walks offer the best opportunities to spot these species, either in the wild or near the park lodges.
Other Wildlife
Though birds are the highlight, Arenal also shelters animals such as howler monekys, white-faced capuchin monkey, tapirs, and sloths. You might also see colourful amphibians like the red-eyed tree frog and reptiles such as green iguanas.
Flora & Natural Environment
The park's ecosystem includes tropical rainforest, cloud forest, and secondary growth, rich in orchids, ferns, and bromeliads. Towering trees like ceiba and laurel provide essential shelter and food sources for many of the park's bird species.
