At leisure

A day to explore on your own, perhaps taking a trek in the scenic hills.

The Lodge at Wah, Palampur

Shimla and the hill stations - First Lodge

The charming Lodge at Wah is situated just outside the historic town of Palampur. Lying in the heart of the Kangra Valley, in northern Himachal Pradesh, the lodge is surrounded by a ring of foothills and the distant snow-capped peaks of the Dhauladhar Himalaya. The air is crisp and fresh, the sky is wonderfully clear and blue (out of monsoon), and the countryside is stunningly beautiful in its mountainous wildness.

The Wah Tea Estate (originally created in 1857) surrounds the lodge, with its pretty pathways and shady trees turning it into a feast for the eye. Now run by the fourth generation of the current owning family, this dynamic young couple wanted to open up their lands to guests and built The Lodge at What which is an utterly charming, cosy, intimate small home in the hills with 8 rooms divided amongst 3 cottages. Using local craftsmen, traditional building techniques and materials, the lodge is constructed almost entirely of wood, mud, stone and slate. They have a strong eco focus in using everything natural and the result is an earthy, rustic, inviting place to rest up in the foothills of the mighty Himalaya.

Very much hosted by the affable owning family, one has an opportunity here to immerse oneself in local culture and tradition, and the workings of a tea estate, chatting by a bonfire in the garden or by a roaring log fire on colder nights. The simple but deliciously comfortable bedrooms are spacious with beamed ceilings, soft, earthy hued furnishings and no paint has been used. Replete with chunky wooden furniture and a plethora of rugs, they have a delightful, country atmosphere but want for nothing – heating, air-conditioning, great bathrooms, some have balconies.

The main house is home to a cosy sitting room and dining room which have been brightened with cheerful fabrics and furnishings. Dining here is a feast and concentrates on flavoursome local recipes, using only organic, local produce and what is in season at the time. In keeping with their strong eco focus, almost everything is home or locally grown – farm to table at its best!

The Lodge at Wah makes the perfect base for visiting visiting tea plantations or nearby Dharamshala which does not really boast anywhere particularly wonderful to stay, and the walking and trekking in the Kangra Valley is fabulous. There are numerous local monasteries, temples and historic Kangra Fort to visit, along with a multitude of idyllic picnic spots – not to mention some of the best paragliding sites in the world! It really is the perfect place to unwind for a few days after a hectic tour around India.

Backwaters cruise

In the morning, drive to the backwaters in the Alleppey district to board your houseboat for a 3-night cruise on a full board basis. The uniqueness of Kerala has always been its Backwaters. On this comfortable floating home you may spend your day relaxing and unwinding. As you slowly cruise along the backwater canals of the Arabian Sea, you may choose to stop and explore some of the many small villages, farmlands, old temples and churches that you come across.

Sunday, 09 June 2024

Exploring the backwaters

Along the way we go ashore to visit some of the local villages and farms, observing traditional livelihoods such as coir making, boat building, fish farming, rice growing and toddy tapping – the extraction of palm sap for production of palm wine, or toddy. We also see churches in a land synonymous with the very beginnings of Christianity: Saint Thomas the Apostle was said to have made a missionary visit to Kerala in 52 AD; to this day Kerala has a significant Christian minority.

Backwaters cruise

Your last day relaxing, enjoying the cuisine on board and the scenery of 'Gods Own Country'.

The Lotus

Kerala & the Backwaters - First River Cruise

The glorious vessel has been converted from a rice barge into a contemporary floating hotel exploring the quiet backwaters.

The Lotus has clean lines and much use of teak, it is bright and fun and fresh. The chef serves delicious meals. There are two large bedrooms with teak floors, cheery colours, large observation windows, i-pod docks, mosquito netting, fans and silent air-conditioning. Each room has a private sit-out and en-suite airy bathrooms (showers).

Relax in the spacious indoor sitting room, by the bar and on the glorious large sun deck for al fresco dining and soaking up the sun - a perfect vantage point for watching a way of life that has changed little over the years.

Undisturbed by the sound of traffic, the birdlife is exceptional and dining under the stars feasting on delicious, freshly caught seafood whilst listening to fish jumping, is magical.

There is no better way to explore Kerala and its hidden secrets of the waterways than by boat. The Lotus offers 1 or 2-night cruises with part of each day spent gently cruising and the rest of it ashore, visiting otherwise unreachable temples, villages and local cottage industries.

RV Vaikundam

Kerala & the Backwaters - First River Cruise

The river cruise boats of today are modified version of the traditional Kettuvallom or Rice barges of the past which had been in use for transporting produce and goods from interior farms to the markets. Today they are comfortable cruising homes to unwind and relax immersing in the pristine nature and inexplicable energy along the meandering network of the Backwaters.

RV Vaikundam has nine well-appointed cabins with attached bathrooms on the lower deck and an excellent kitchen. There is an air-conditioned and exquisitely set dining hall and open lounge on the upper deck. The   wooden hull of the boat is made by joining planks of local wood ‘Aanjili,’ using strong coir rope on the segments above waterline while, below waterline copper tacking keeps the hull both strong and traditional. The wood is coated with caustic black resin made by boiling cashew kernel and fish oil. The wood is periodically treated with the Neem oil and Fish oil. The cabins are made using wooden panels, bamboo poles and bamboo mats, following the traditional practices. Each cabin is air-conditioned and has a private bathroom and either double or twin bed.

Ahilya by the Sea

Goa - Luxury Boutique

Ahilya by the Sea is a special boutique ‘villa’ hotel situated at the end of a beach in a quiet location with Panaji and places such as Anjuna within easy reach.

It has emerged as a result of two families merging in marriage with one providing the idyllic location (The Trindade family) and the other providing years of built up hoteliering expertise (The Holkars of Ahilya Fort). As a result the family have created Ahilya by the Sea in a unique boutique hotel.

The Trindade family is famous for its connections to the arts and the idea behind the hotel is to recreate the glorious styles of Old Goa but with a nod to more modern, comfortable amenities. It is a place where guests will experience an authentic, artistic, rich Goan connection and feel like pampered, integrated locals rather than harried tourists. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with a strong emphasis on the arts, music and cuisine – the owning family’s passions!

There are seven spacious rooms and three separate Portuguese style villas (perfect for renting separately, in their entirety) made from hand hewn local red laterite rock, and 1 tower room. The interiors are relaxed and inviting and home to a fascinating collection of personal antiques and Goan art.

Outside comprises lush gardens with two lap pools and shady verandahs for resting on admiring the view, with the sea breezes wafting over you, and there’s a small massage room. Meals are taken in different places according to the weather and time of day but, suffice it to say, whether you eat in the cool dining area inside or alfresco, listening to the ocean, dining here will always be an event to savour!

All this, together with Goa’s rich tradition of hospitality, culture, cuisine and history, is on your doorstep so you never have to travel far (if at all), nor tear yourself away from precious time resting and feasting in the sun, to have what will undoubtedly be a magical, genuine Goan experience - a world away from the madness with which Goa is often associated today.

Ahilya by the Sea is the perfect place to end a holiday (2 night minimum stay), providing a warm, intimate, authentic base from which to explore this fascinating state. This is Goa at its best!
