A river cruise in Kalimantan is a unique and unforgettable experience to observe the critically endangered bornean orangutan (pongo pygmaeus) in the wild. You will see orangutans in their natural habitat, feeding, making nests and playing with their young or traversing the tree tops. It is an opportunity to learn more about the orangutan and understand why they are so close to extinction from your experienced guide.

What to see on your cruise inTanjung Puting National Park:

  • ex-captive orangutans now living in the wild, social behaviour, making daily nests and feeding
  • wild orangutans
  • bornean bearded pigs and wild boar
  • black handed gibbons
  • long and short tailed macaques
  • silvered langur
  • maroon langur and red leaf monkeys
  • hornbills, asian pied, rhinoceros hornbill
  • kingfishers
  • monitor lizards and flying lizards
  • green tree frogs
  • honey bears
  • plus many different tropical insects
  • crocodiles
  • amazing plant diversity
  • there are approximately 600 types of tree and almost 250 species of bird

The cruise helps the local communities, supports local trekking guides, helps the orangutans and provides alternative income for the local villages and camps you visit. There is also an innovative carbon offsetting program where you can purchase trees and plant them. The trees, once grown capture carbon and provide food for the orangutans and other species.

Boat description

Built in traditional style, the Borneo Ecotour deluxe boats offer comfortable accommodation, with a choice of double or twin cabins, a sun deck and lounge. Most meals are taken al fresco as the boat sails gently up or down river.

All meals are included on the cruises, as well as guided walking tours ashore exploring the nature and wildlife of the jungle, including visits to the several orangutan sanctuaries, the most famous being Camp Leakey.

The boats can be booked on a shared basis with other guests, or chartered for your own private use. The experience is a wonderful adventure in this remote region of Indonesia, where your presence supports local communities and their efforts to protect the forest, grow more trees and the support the incredible bird and wildlife that exists here.
