On the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, west of Merida, is the small town of Celestún and its natural lagoon of salty water next to the sea.
Located on the Gulf of Mexico, west of Merida, the small coastal town of Celestun is the gateway to one of Mexico's most important biospher reserves. This vast protected area is a sanctury where saltwater meets freshwater ecosystems, creating a haven for a wide variety of widlife.
The reserve is most famous for its vibrant flocks of Flamingos, which gather in the shallow lagoons and estuaries to feed on shrimp and algae, giving them their distinctive pink hue. A boat trip through the mangroves offers a chance to get up close to the birds, as well as to spot pelicans, herons, and even crocodiles. The peaceful ride also reveals natural freshwater springs that bubble up into the lagoon, known locally as "ojos de agua".
Beyond the boat trip, visitors can enjoy short walks along nature trails, take in views of crystal-clear cenotes, or relax in the laid-back fishing village of Celestun itself. It is an ideal excursion for birdwatchers, nature lover, and families alike - offering a tranquil contrast to the Yucatan's busier archaeological and beach destinations.
