Jungle Pyramids of Chicanna, Becan & Calakmul

Deep in the dense jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula lie three of Mexico's most fascinating and lesser-known Mayan archaeological sites - Chicanna, Becan and Calakmul - all connected by the scenic Highway 186 and easily explored over a day or two.

Chicanna is thought to have been a more exclusive residentail area for local rulers, known today for its delicate architectural details and ornate stonework decorating small pyramid facades. Nearby Becan served as the politcal and ceremonial hub of the region, with its defensive moat, impressive plazas and two grand pyramids hinting at its historic signifance.

Further into the jungle, Calakmul stands as one of the largest and most important Mayan cities ever discovered. Now part of an extensive Biosphere Reserve, the site is home to one of the tallest pyramids in Mexico and once supported a vast population. Its scale and isolatation make it a deeply atmospheric and rewarding site for adventurous travellers.
