Relaxing on a quiet secluded beach is the perfect way to unwind after days spent exploring Nicaragua's colonial cities, hiking its nature trails and climbing its volcanic peaks.
The remote horeshoe-shaped Playa Ocotal, hidden behind dense jungle on the Pacific coast, can only be accessed by staying at the exclusive eco-lodge Morgan's Rock. This is a collection of ocean-view private bungalows, clustered together in a protected reserve and set in lush forest, from where you can head out to hike, horse-ride, kayak or stroll in often serene isolation in the beautiful surrounds.
Located in the middle of the vast Lake Nicaragua is the verdant and traditional island of Ometepe. It is best know for the two volcanoes which dominate and define its landscape, or the numerous hiking opportunities which it affords to visitors, but it also offers a stretch of inviting sand at the Playa Santo Domingo. As well as enjoying the cooling sea breeze and taking a dip in the sea, from here you can watch a variety of birds which nest nearby, or walk down to Playa Santa Cruz for excellent views of Ometepe's two volcanoes.
