Lake Nicaragua is the biggest of its kind in Central America, home to tranquil islands dominated by volcanoes and one of the continent's most attractive colonial cities.

On the shores of Lake Nicaragua is the beautiful colonial era city of Granada. Dominated by the magnificent brightly-coloured cathedral, the centre is adorned with elegant architecture and churches and oozes a timeless and easy-going vibe. With a climate conducive to year-round visits for relaxing boat trips and days on the surrounding beaches, it's no surprise that Granada is growing ever more popular with travellers to Central America.

In the middle of the lake itself is the small island of Ometepe, dominated by two towering volcanoes, which rise out of the depths of the lake. Spend a few days here to cycle, kayak, swim, hike or horse-ride to appreciate the exotic scenery of cloud forest, waterfalls and volcanoes and look out for the diverse wildlife that resides here. Or instead simply take it easy and lounge on its golden beaches.
