Upgrade my browserInca archaeological sites are a stunning testament to a powerful empire which conquered a large part of South America before the Spanish arrived.
The land of the Incas, famed for the magnificent citadel of Machu Picchu, is a living testament to the once great empire whose golden treasures continue to be unearthed each day. One can see ancient ruins shrouded in mist and mystery dotted throughout the country. The four day Inca Trail leads trekkers past 30 Inca sites and affords spectacular views of ancient agricultural terraces before arriving at Machu Picchu, undoubtedly the country’s star attraction.
The nearby Sacred Valley is also home to some of the best preserved archaeology, particularly in the spectacular ruins at Pisac and Ollantaytambo at either end of the valley. In Cusco, the former capital of the empire, Inca foundations blend with stunning colonial mansions and many churches show a fascinating mix of pagan and Christian beliefs.
