The South Sandwich Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. Stunningly beautiful and rugged, these uninhabited islands are a sanctuary for  wildlife. The visitor can observe penguins, seals, whales, petrels and other birds and mammals that thrive in this frozen landscape of snow covered peaks, blue glacier ice and emerald green bays.

Captain James Cook discovered the eight of the southern islands in the South Sandwich group in 1775. The name was chosen in honour of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. South was added so as not to confuse these islands with the Sandwich Islands - now known as the Hawaiian Islands.

The Territories have been under UK administration since 1908, but were briefly occupied by Argentinean forces in 1982 and claimed by Argentina in the mid 1950’s. Since the Falklands War, Britain has retained sovereignty.
