Belize City, a former colony of British Honduras, reveals a interesting cultural heritage.

Belize City, the former capital of Belize and the nation’s largest city, rises on the Caribbean Sea, on the banks of the Haulover Creek. Founded in 1638 by pirates on the ancient Mayan city of Holzuz, the city reached its peak a few centuries later thanks to the exploitation of mahogany. Considered as one of the largest colonies of the English crown, Belize City offers a heritage that tourists sometimes tend to forget. The tall British colonial buildings blend with the relaxed Caribbean atmosphere of the colourful little streets.

Half a day is enough to appreciate the culture of the city, gathered in the heart of its city centre. Starting with the sublime Saint John’s Anglican Cathedral, considered as one of the largest Anglican cathedrals in Central America. The National Museum, former prison of His Majesty, is now a museum dedicated to the historical and cultural past of the country. Boats and planes also depart from Belize City for the Belizean islands, such as Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.
