The capital of Para Region at the mouth of the Amazon, full of life, grand colonial architecture and gardens with excellent insights into the flora and fauna of the Amazon.

Belem is the capital of the Para region in Northern Brazil, located at the mouth of the Amazon River at the Amazon river estuary on the Para River, over 60 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to colonise the Amazon region back in 1616. The name Belem actually translates to the ‘City of Bethlehem’. At that time, the Portuguese established the city to protect the mouth of the river from outside invaders, but it soon became a major trading port. The boom in rubber in the 19th century provided the wealth for the colonial rulers to build wide avenues, churches and grand European style houses and mansions.

These days Belem is a modern port city with much to offer the visitor, including the dock area where you can observe the lively scenes at the fish market and enjoy a variety of restaurants, bars and cafes in a relaxed atmosphere. The Praca da Republica and its centrally located park is a great place to cool down, the elegant opera house Teatro da Paz is well worth a visit, there are several botanical gardens giving superb insights into the flora of the Amazon region. Other highlights are the cathedral, Basilica de Nossa Senhora de Nazare (one of the most beautiful churches in South America) and the excellent Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi.

You can take a local boat from Belem to Manaus which takes about 3 days in a small cabin or hammock, but with no guided tours ashore. As the river is so wide, you will not see much wildlife from the boat on the riverbanks either. We therefore recommend, after a couple of days enjoying Belem, flying to Manaus and exploring the heart of the Amazon River on the comfortable M/V Tucano with excursions included.
