Sao Luiz is the capital of Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its painstakingly restored Portuguese and French colonial architecture and vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture. The city is the gateway to exploring nearby Lencois Maranhenses National Park, but also worth staying a couple of days to enjoy in its own right.

Explore the historic centre including the Palácio dos Leões (seat of government), Palácio La Ravardiere, and Palácio das Lágrima. Here, observe colourful azulejos (glazed tiles), 17th-19th century buildings, and landmarks like Pedro II Square and the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Vitoria.

São Luís is also famous for its literary heritage, and the birthplace of poets and writers like Gonçalves Dias and Aluísio Azevedo. São Luís Central Market is a good place to explore and browse local handicrafts.

There are several good beaches in Sao Luiz and the regional cuisine is definitely worth a try including arroz de cuxá (made with dried shrimp and vinagreira leaves) and fresh seafood, often served with cauim (a traditional fermented drink.
