Parnaíba is located in the northeastern Brazilian state of Piauí, and best known as the gateway to the Parnaíba Delta, a vast biodiverse wetland where the Parnaíba River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The city itself is set on the river Igaracu, and prior to the river silting up, was once a thriving port.

You can explore the historic Centre, including Nossa Senhora das Graças Church and Praça do Amor. The real highlight is exploring the Parnaíba Delta, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of Brazil’s most important ecological sites. Here, take a boat tour to see mangroves, islands, and wildlife like scarlet ibises, caimans and crabs. 

The riverside port area in Parnaiba is known as Porto das Barcas and is a good place to immerse yourself in local life and the cuisine including the region’s famous crab dishes. You can take a day trip to a nearby white, sandy beach or visit Parque Nacional Sete Cidades, with its unique rock formations and hiking trails.
