Visit one of the wonders of the world on the banks of the Yamuna River, plus Agra Fort and nearby Fatehpur Sikri,
Agra lies on the banks of the Yamuna River and is the location for India's most famous building, the awe-inspiring Taj Mahal.
Agra began life as a small village, but in 1504 the muslim ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. Sultan Sikandar Lodi moved his capital to Agra. The city came to prominence in the era of the Mughals, where it remained the capital of the Mughal Empire. These mighty rulers built the Great Red Fort and nearby Fatehpur Sikri.
It was Shah Jahan, a keen architect, who built the Taj Mahal in loving memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1653. After the decline of the Mughal Empire, the Marathas controlled the city and called it Agra. The British took over control in 1803.
Such is the beauty of this famous building, the moment you see the iconic view of the Taj Mahal, you are filled with feelings of joy and admiration. The white marble mausoleum on the banks of the Yamuna River is a sight to behold; a jewel of muslim art the building is the best of Persian and Mughal architecture. The white marble is inlaid with semi precious stones. The tomb is the centre of the building, framed by four minarets. The most spectacular feature of the Taj Mahal is the marble dome some 35 metres high.
A visit to the Taj Mahal needs to be carefully planned to avoid the many crowds of tourists that visit every day. Our local guides will plan your time here well in advance and ensure your time here is memorable.
The climate in Agra is the same as Delhi, with June to August being very hot and wet. The best time to visit is from October to April, with December to February being the coolest months.
