A wonderful way to connect with the many diverse landscapes is to undertake your preferred activities, tailored to your skill level.
Some of the best hiking opportunities in South America are found in the Torres del Paine national park in Chile and from the small Patagonian town of El Chalten, over the other side of the Andes in Argentina. Horseriding is a wonderful way to connect with nature, particularly in the mountains of Argentina where people throughout the country love horses.
On half-day, full-day or multi-day treks you will encounter chiseled granite peaks, sparkling lakes and lagoons and dramatic glaciers, keeping your eyes peeled for the Andean Condor. The Sacred Valley in Peru is another excellent centre for hikes, many reaching ancient Inca ruins. The classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the most well-known, but there also other enticing options.
The Amazon affords a number of activity opportunities, including jungle trails, kayaking and canopy walks, as well as camping, tree climbing and mountain biking in some cases. The city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Santiago in Chile are close to areas of immense natural beauty in which to undertake day hikes of varying degrees of difficulty.
The area surrounding the Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica is another popular destination with active travellers, taking advantage of hiking, rafting, zip wiring and even quad biking opportunities, not to mention the famous hanging bridges. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Manuel Antonio National Park can easily be combined with Arenal, offering further opportunities to get active in nature.
Visitors to China can hike along wild sections of the Great Wall, often in complete isolation if you know where to go, whilst Tibet has a number of multi-day hikes, some linking historic monasteries and one leading in to Mount Everest Base Camp. The peaks of Huangshan and Yangshuo are wonderful places to hike amid some of the country's finest landscapes, with scenery that has inspired much of the country's classic artwork through the centuries.
Those undertaking an expedition cruise to Antarctica will also have the chance to go sea kayaking, snow walking and even camping overnight on the White Continent.
